So, I’ve been working on editing this story and I’m getting down to the very end. It’s painful. I forgot how much of a love/hate relationship I have with editing. I write pretty clean so that’s good. What’s bad is, this manuscript is ten years old, and I rewrote it eight years ago then set it aside to go write real smut LOL. I’m down to the wire now and faced with gutting the end of the book. It’s HARD to cut words (I won’t call them darlings) but it has to be done. I’ve danced back and forth across that 60k line so many times I’m getting dizzy. The problem here is, there’s not enough anger at the end. Everyone’s too nice and that’s VERY VERY BAD. People need to be upset, words need to be said (and there’s the not so small matter of having to decide what secondary storylines are important, what aren’t and how to address them in a way that feeds into the main storyline. And of course, my writing chops are RUSTY PEOPLE RUSTY!!!!
Here’s the interesting thing though…I’ve been reading this romance, it’s very well written, on a 5 Star scale I’d give it a 3. It’s good but not great, but well written which is important to me as a reader. Bad writing = DNF in my book. It’s got a lot of characters, that gets confusing, but it’s also kind of a fun book. It’s a reunited lovers story which I have a soft spot for. The kicker here is…THE CONFLICT. The reunited lovers. I’m almost done, they’ve sort of reconciled and are working out their issues, they’ve talked (there’s no sex in this book I think or it was off-screen so it’s hard to tell), but honestly, if I hadn’t been paying attention, I might have missed it because now they’re like dating and stuff and I’m like WTF? You just sort of apologized to each other and that was it? Really?
So why am I killing myself over the conflict in my current WIP? Hmmm
So tell me, what’s your conflict? What’s your current WIP about (friends to lovers? marriage of convenience?) What’s your poison and what’s your conflict?)
