Mel is currently draining her red pen whilst performing radical surgery on my book. Seems the plot has run amuck and the pacing is off. Way off. Like the distance between Rhode Island and Scotland.
This got me thinking about my writerly Achilles heel as well as my strengths. If asked about the former, I’ll immediately say plotting. As for my strengths? Description, emotion and dialogue.
But sometimes a writer’s strength can become a weakness. Like when you get so lost in description and/or emotion that you sabotage your pacing. That’s when your strength becomes a weakness, a weakness in strength’s clothing.
Not that I would know anything about that….
It’s like baking a cake. Too much sugar will put you in a diabetic coma. Too little milk will produce a brick. Too much butter, and you’ll end up with a greasy, inedible sponge.
So sometimes if something comes easily for you, it might take over to the detriment of everything else, especially if your off switch gets stuck from time to time.
Of course, I wouldn’t know anything about that either….
What are your strengths and weaknesses? Has there ever been a time when your strength has morphed into a weakness?
