Love triangles, that’s what. Some of my favorites include:
Scarlett O’Hara, Ashley Wilkes, and Rhett Butler–Gone with the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell
———————————-
Sophie, Nathan and Stingo–Sophie’s Choice by William Styron
———————————-
Elena, Damon and Stefan, The Vampire Diaries book series by L.J. Smith
———————————-
Katniss Everdeen, Gale Hawthorne, and Peeta Mellark–Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins
———————————-
King Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot of the Arthurian Legend
———————————-
Bella, Edward and Jacob–Twilight saga by Stephanie Meyer
———————————-
Sookie, Eric and Bill, Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris
So what attracts me to these melodramatic pairings? For one, I think the dynamic is frightening, namely because of the risks. What if the character chooses the wrong man? And what sort of relationship do the two rival suitors have with each other?
Even more delicious? What if the two
suitors love each other like brothers? There’s Spartacus‘ tragic bromance between Gannicus and Oenomaus, along with the twin legends of Tristan and King Mark as well as King Arthur and Sir Lancelot. I especially like these types of triangles—ones where you honestly can’t decide which
lover would be the best choice because both are equally likable … and compelling. Of course, I love the bad boy/good boy triangles too. However, nine times out of ten, I almost always choose the bad boy.
1) What is your favorite love triangle (fiction, TV or film) of all time, and why?
2. In your real-world opinion, can a person truly be IN LOVE with two people at the same time? Have you ever been in love with two people at the same time? Do you know of anyone (friend, acquaintance or family member) who ever loved two people at once?
