Just another damn group blog!
S’okay Friday Raine posted about pirates. I am still angry about that (Well truly this has been piquing my ire for some time). How does someone think it’s okay to steal from someone else? No matter what they say as why it’s okay, why it’s not wrong, IT IS. It is stealing plain and simple. They are consuming a product they didn’t pay for and taking money away from the author, the editor and the publisher. I made the comment that, would they walk into a book store pull something from the shelf and just walk out. I would hope the answer is no, but it *IS* the same thing. They are taking something for free they have no right to.
Just because the access to something like that is easy–and unfortunately quick–doesn’t make it any more right. I *heart* my analogies so here ya go: Would you go into a grocery store pick up a six pack of soda or beer and just walk out? It’s easy. It’s not secured or tagged w/ a sensor. BooM! There ya go, you got something to drink. Would you walk into Macy’s a snap up a shirt and say, “y’know, I saw this on my friend and want one too. Thanks. Bye.”
No?
But why? It’s just there. you want it. Why wouldn’t you take the shirt? It’s *WRONG*, that’s why. You know it’s wrong. You know you’re not supposed to. If you can’t afford it, you wait til you can or do without. You are breaking the law when you steal and violate the store/policy just the same as when you bypass the copyright law. No two ways about it.
If you want to read a free book go to the library–they paid for the damn thing so you *can* read it for free.
Don’t get so bent outta shape. You’re building a fan base, they will buy your next book. No they won’t; they will just post another request and get it the same channels they did before. Worse yet, if the *like* you, they’ll get ALL you books and by doing so give that many more people access to your work. It’s not flattering. It’s not a good feeling. It’s thievery. grrrrr…………… :diebastard:
sorry… end rant…. but I REALLY needed to vent.
Would you like to rant about something? I am in a *mood* to commiserate!

Oh honey, I could keep going along the same vein, lol.
Was referred to a site this weekend that not only had free downloads, but a message board with readers making REQUESTS–and a few complaining that their free download was faulty (had extra dashes inserted, cut off at one point, etc.).
“Could you please post (NAME OF BOOK) by (AUTHOR)? She’s my favorite author!”
But you can’t spend a few bucks to legitimately support that author??
Ok, I’m done.

Even if our books were more than $3 to $6 bucks… even then…. there is no readining you can convince me it’s okay grr. (That’s one cup of Starbucks, one pack of ciggies… you can make do with one or the other)
My mother taught me if you can’t afford it/pay for it, you can’t have it. Libraries are free if you just feel the need to read and don’t want to pay. You can even get them to ship from one in their system to the other if it’s not at your local library. They even have e-books–that expire when your time is up just like the reg. books… sorry I’m ranting again

To piggie back on what Raine said, you’d think these ninnies would know that if they continue reading for free, these authors they sooooooo enjoy won’t be able to write anymore. They’ll have to switch the time they used to have for writing to time spent looking for other employment!
This is a “something for nothing” culture we live in.

Agreed, it is stealing. Does anyone else cringe when you send out a pdf copy of your book to a reviewer? I know they would never, ever stoop to… oh never mind.
