I love werewolves, lol. And that’s interesting. Just before my contribution to “Howl” was released, I got a letter from a reader asking for reassurance that there was no sex-in-the-wolf-form in the story. I was able to give it (although the ‘change’ happened just a few seconds afterward), but I honestly hadn’t thought of it as a problem until then.

Dragons. I burned out on reading dragon stories a few years ago, which probably soured me on them altogether. I tried to write one into a book in another go at aversion therapy, hated it, and made a vow never to do that again.

Loving families, best girlfriends, and other fictionally-idealized protagonist emotional support characters. They have zero appeal for me. Unlike magic I do think they exist in real life, but I have issues with the slightly nauseating way they’re portrayed in most books, especially romantic fiction. In my experience, no one is ever that loving/forgiving/supportive/non-judgemental.

Gratuitously-killed animals, especially pets. If you’re a pet in my books, you’re probably going to be much-loved and have a long and happy attack- and injury-free life.

I know! (although, frankly, I have issues with that particular policy of that particular church—but this isn’t the venue for it).

Jen, I was brought up in the church too. I have since gone far, far astray–but even if I hadn’t, I think I’d be inclined to depict its members as the human beings they are.
Unless, of course, they’re really vampires or zombies or demons…
