It means that the reader is telling you: I trust you to entertain me.

Also, it means I love your books so much I can read them over and over again. Never get sick of it.

I'm surprised she said that.

BTW, it’s weird, but I’m a hoarder. I even keep the bad books. Makes no damned sense.

Sigh, just get rid of the bad ones. Maybe someone else will love them. But, I can say that I've only thrown away one book in stellar condition. Couldn't even bring myself to give it to someone else. The book was that bad.

I wrote a post somewhat related to this one in regards to memories triggered by beloved childhood stories, and what you loved about them, besides the actual story. For me The Gunniwolf left an image imprinted in my mind of sunny fields bursting with flowers.

But...as for grown up books. I dunno know. I do know that there are writers whose books I keep just because getting lost in those stories make me happy. JAK falls into this category. I think I read someplace that she's not fond of the term 'comfort read', but that's what she is for me, and I think it's one of the highest accolades an author can have. It means that the reader is telling you: I trust you to entertain me.

btw, I love the image this bit paints:

"Chance by Robert B. Parker…one of the many books my mother and I listened to on tape. Even got my daughter hooked. Weekdays all of us tired, but sitting in the living room gasping, ohhing, awwing with each twist of the story."

Reminds me of visiting my grandmother as a child and all us gathered around the radio listening to the radio melodramatic soap-opera serials (even the men in the family!).

Great post, Mel!

The book that made me fall in love with romance? Damn. I can't even remember. I think it was one of Judith McNaught's. Either her or Anne Stuart. Probably the latter. I remember one of Stuart's books (the one with the twisted cult leader as the hero) so impressed me that I sent it to my mom to read. :lmao: I just couldn't get over how AS pulled it off. To this day it still amazes me.

I don’t feel qualified to answer this question as I am a book hoarder… yes, I can admit it.

Hon, you can call 1-800-BKA-DDIK for that problem. Lol. I'm not a big re-reader, but the books I re-read have 5 + reads to their name. Example one of my writing friends hadn't read Karen Marie Monings Fever Series. I gave her mind. She almost passed out. One was a hardback the other only had a few creases. Not that I didn't love the stories, but they just weren't re-read material.

On the other hand, I'm re-reading Smoke and Mirrors by JAK. Has to be my 7th time.

Lastly, let go of the books. You won't even remember you had it. Trust me.

That was my first keeper, and I still have that book upstairs on my shelves, too.

Oh, that is wonderful. You get a gold star for the day.

When I heard a couple years later they were making a movie out of it, I was stunned. I didn’t think it could be done.

I still haven't seen that movie fully. I've watched the safe for t.v. version. I'm kind of scared to see it uncensored.

So, did the movie live up to the book for you?

think this is one of the most awesome blog posts ever–because it’s probably something most peeps don’t think a lot about.
:cloud9:

And, yeah, some books, because of their memories, are harder to throw out than for the reason of the actual value of the book.

I believe the first brand-new book I ever bought for myself was Mistress Devon by Virginia Coffman. It was during the big gothic trend back in the early 70's when they had covers with the chick in the billowy gown/robe/cape running around a cliff, standing on a staircase or in some other precarious position while she held a lantern or candle. I paid for it with some babysitting money, and I think it was the first time I realized that I could build my own library, one book at a time, out of what I liked to read (versus depending on the public and school libraries.)
