duck-and-cover

Long ago, when I was a wee child, we practiced what came to be known as Duck and Cover Drills on the tail end of our country’s Cold War.

The school drills consisted of ducking under your tiny desk, covering your head, and closing your eyes at a given signal—in case of a nuclear war.

Some of the more optimistic teachers suggested, “If there’s a flash of light, duck out of sight!”
Uh-huh.

Yup.  Nothing says secure, happy childhood like wondering if the godless Commie Bastards might let one fly at any moment.

For some reason, this particular exercise has come back to mind occasionally while blog-hopping.
I found myself wondering if it was possible—and how far it’s possible—to keep up with the publishing business online, visit the blogs and websites of RWA, writers, editors, agents, and readers, and take part in discussions without becoming involved in flame wars, mud-slinging, negativity, and petty bullshit?

I’ve been blogging for over 3 years now, and haven’t encountered any nuclear fallout in my space (so far).  No problem stepping up with an opinion, or agreeing or disagreeing with someone when it seems important.  Got no aversion to mixing it up for a good cause.  But I’m not online to beat anybody over the head with a stick, or convince them of the error of their ways—any ways.

There have been times, however, when I’ve really felt the urge to grab somebody and slap ‘em around a little.  Arrogance is a big trigger for me, as is cruelty.  Not that I’m above being a bitch now and then, but dayum.  Sometimes the contaminate level is WAY beyond healthy for your already crazed writer-type.

Have you ever been tempted to jump in head-first, sans asbestos suit?  Give somebody a reality check?  Tried to steer clear of certain toxic people who seem to be everywhere?  Developed a lead-lined cloak which protects you from fallout?  Found yourself convinced that Satan is alive and well and working through the Internet?

Or do you religiously practice your own personal Duck and Cover exercises?
