Never say never, except….
They say never say never, but we do, don’t we? Only to prove the old adage. For instance there are book type that I’ve said I’d never write or read, only to find myself reading or writing that book months or years later.
I’ve always said I’ll never write a hard science sci-fi and I think I’m pretty safe with that one. Every time I pick one up–because the cover, title or blurb–I rarely get through the first paragraph of technobabble before putting it back on the shelf. More accessible sci-fi/futuristic stuff I have no problem with, though.
Also, I’ve always assumed I’d never write a menage a trois book. I’ve read and enjoyed them, but in terms of my writing I’m more a one man/one woman (at a time) gal. At the very most I could see myself writing a love triangle. At yet, there will be a menage scene of sorts in the current wip. It fits for many reasons of character and plot, but won’t be the standard, expected fare.
So what type of book would you say, as of today, that you’d never read/write?
What type of book have you said in the past that you woudn’t read/write, but did?

HEA’s are the only kind I care to write or read. :) I never thought I’d write a Sci-Fi novel of any sort, but I did.
Probably YA but that is mostly because my kids are at an age that I so don’t want to focus on it more than need be… maybe when they are grown I will go back and dabble in YA.
Bernard, I loved Star Trek, Battlestar Gallactica, Twilightzone, et growing up, so I’m kinda surprised I don’t love sci-fi books more than I do. I still love the shows and movies, though. And yes(!) on the HEA ending! For writing at least, I think I could write a story that had an ambivalent ending, but only if it wasn’t a romance.
Dennie, I’ve been reading and enjoying more YA lately, but I have no interest in writing one.
I’ll never write a gory murder slash novel. I’m a coward. Can’t take gory murder details.
I like fantasy/sci-fi work, but as you said, the techno-babble stuff puts me right off. I can even read it in a scientific journal of some sort, but not in a storyline. Go figure.
I didn’t think I could write a menage, but I did. Problem was, I felt the need to JUSTIFY it (which may be why the story didn’t work well, lol).
And I will never, ever write YA or children’s books. They would just be SO twisted, and the temptation to warp those young minds would be too great…
I said for years as much as I love Sci-fi and fantasy (from BSG to Terry Brooks) I could never write it. And said, there’s too much paranormal. There’s nothing different so i won’t even try. Then i wrote a futuristic proposal and I’m plotting a YA Paranormal (that will RAWK *TYVM*)
So Honestly, NEVER say never.
I said I’d never write or read YA, but I did both. Go figure.
Lol. Raine, please don’t mind decision until my children are older. That YA box would get to you and your head would explode.
Now what have I said?
I’d never write a straight contemporary romance.
I’d never write a story that is full of gushy feelings that make me ill, because there is a difference with writing emotion and writing gushy feelings…
Anyway, my first book to sell was a straight contemporary romance. My second book has gushy feelings that make me ill every time I read it. I guess you can’t dictate the muse.
But I can saftely say I’ll never write a Sci-Fi. I grew up with StarTrek. *shudders* Now a fantasy, maybe. YA, maybe. Sci-Fi never ever, ever.
Tanya you write some KILLER YA!!!!!!!
*lurks in the corner watching mel*
That’s surprising, Gennita. After that Mexican donkey video, I didn’t think anything would phase you….
“They would just be SO twisted, and the temptation to warp those young minds would be too great…”
lol. I admire the fact that you want to give them a fighting chance. You’ll get them when they hit adulthood, right? *g* Seriously, though, maybe an older age bracket YA might be perfect for some mind twisting stuff…. jes sayin
Cece, I rest my case. lol. Good luck with the submissions.
Tanya — ditto what i said to Cece. All it takes is the right idea.
Melissa - “My second book has gushy feelings that make me ill every time I read it.”
lol
Hey, what’s up with the ’shuddering’ re StarTrek?!
Luv that show man. But I’m on board with you, I think I can write futuristic or a soft sci-fi (with vague details, etc). But something based on hard scientic fact, theory? fuggedabutit.

Amie, I didn’t do it. That is all.
Tayna, I shudder from StarTrek because my father had the movies. It came on everynight at 7 p.m. and I was forced to watch it. I had nightmares of being beamed up to space.
But, yes, I can’t do world building from the ground up. Even I can’t bs that well.
>>It came on everynight at 7 p.m. and I was forced to watch it.
Mel I feel the same way about MASH!!!!!! GAAAAAA I can’t stand it on principle alone!
I think Raine should write a YA for older teens. I could SO see her doing something ala Holly Black
