I See Jumpy Peoplez
Or how what could have been a great movie went terribly wrong.
One thing you have to know when you sit down to watch a Shyamalan movie is that it’s as much about the human condition as it is about the external conflict that drives. And as a writer, I respect that. Sometimes, like with Unbreakable and Lady in the Water, it works in ways that blow your mind. Sometimes, like with The Village it misses it’s mark and makes you got
. And Signs is actually one of the few movies that ever pissed me off–probably because I bought it instead of rented it. Anyway with The Happening you have the entire Eastern Seaboard running scared because, “There’s an event happening.” Mark Whalberg plays a school teacher who’s having marital troubles (enter the human condition), when he finds out school in Philadelphia is being dismissed because of the event in New York that is quickly driving folks to kill themselves. He, his wife, a fellow teacher and the teacher’s daughter all jump on a train but the train stops because they’ve “lost contact” No one knows what’s causing the event but everyone initially thinks it’s terrorits/biological warfare. Now while all of this is going on, Whalberg’s wife is getting phone calls from a guy named Joey. (Spoilers below the cut)
Instead of having to deal with a cheating spouse–which could have made for some DANDY conflict while on the run–you find out his wife went out for PIE with a guy from work. Granted, she lied to her husband … but they had PIE, not SEX! (cop out)
So your human condition is quickly settled, though Whalberg’s character later pokes fun at his wife–which is pretty funny. The levity really helps alleviate the tension….but the tension never maximizes. Bad things happen, people die, Whalberg figures out what’s going on (he is after all a science teacher which means he can figure out anything). The explanation given for the event is interesting but not exactly scary (and left me wondering if Al Gore was consulted on the script).
There was no anticipation, no hurry, no….clock to beat. Just…move slowly in small groups so you don’t piss off the plants,
grass and trees who are emitting a toxin that’s driving people crazy and making them kill themselves. And some of the deaths were rather gruesome.
No, I’m not joking. Yeah, that’s it.
The best part about the whole movie–the music. Cheesy 70’s B flick movie music (pre-Friday the Thirteenth here) that totally fit the movie. I actually liked it and thought it was a nice touch.
Even with such a cheesy plot/explanation this could have been a really great movie (if Whalberg’s wife had really cheated, then been in danger and he had to decide to save her…or not–yeah! If the event had spread further than the NE Seaboard and Whalberg had to help stop it? Yeah…cuz you know all HS Science Teachers are secretly Nobel Prize winners. If they had actually gone to save John Leguizamo and his wife…..sure. Id’a bought it–maybe. Sadly it fell far short in character AND external conflict. I almost wish I’d wasted my money on The Hulk.
If this was a book it would have been one I put down after about 50 pages and then never finished. So, what movies or books have you read that fell short in execution? Did they piss you of or just make you go “meh?”

Well geez–didn’t expect to find a post here!
I’d read about the premise for this movie online before it came out, and was absolutely SURE I was not going to see it. M. Night has gone seriously astray with the movies lately. It’s like he may start out with an interesting premise, but the execution is lacking. Atmosphere is seldom enough to make a movie.
Short on execution?
The Sex and the City movie, imho. Too slow, too long, too somber. It was lacking the “fun” aspect of the show, and the theme didn’t seem to be about ‘relationships’, but about ‘relationships gone WRONG’.
Loved the show, but glad I didn’t pay to see this.
and left me wondering if Al Gore was consulted on the script no shit, I swear I felt like I was watching a commercial!
Marky Mark was AWFUL who knew he could be so campy. I don’t know that I have ever walked away from a movie angry–this one yep, I was mad!
Cece,
I heard beforehand that The Happening sucked lemons. Critics dogged it. So I guess I’ll wait for the DVD. BTW, I hated Lady In The Water. Hated. In fact, I didn’t even finish watching it.
I kinda liked Signs, and The Village was okay. Favorite scene was the marriage proposal on the porch with the blind girl and Phoenix. Very poignant and romantic. Unbreakable was nice too.
Disappointing movies? Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull — HUGE disappointment. It never quite got off the ground for me. Sure, there were a few laughs, but the script was flat and the movie went on too long. I wasn’t engaged and found myself checking my watch (not a good sign) throughout.
PS, DH and I took the kids to see the Hulk. LOVED it!
DARN IT and i skipped the Hulk because of Carrie VAugn’s review
And I actually LOVED the Indy movie hehehe
>>BTW, I hated Lady In The Water.
OMGWTF!
It’s like one of my FAVES LOL ah well…..different strokes and all that.
Vee…..I’ve never seen SITC and will doubtlessly skip the movie (BTW SURPRISE!!!!!!!)…however I really liked Lipstick Jungle (maybe because some of the characters were a little more my age–and hte guy who plays Brooke Shields’ hubby is the one from Dresden Files *ggg* )
Ames, I think you would’ve liked the tv Sex & the City. Consider checking out a rerun if you get a chance…
As for M. Night—honestly, the Sixth Sense was his first and best. I sort of liked Signs, but really—straight-up rip-off of War of the Worlds, with a few crop circles tossed in.
All the rest have left me unimpressed, I’m afraid.
Now—looking forward to WANTED!
I’d heard this film had problems.
Personally, I didn’t care for Indi or the Hulk. The latter seemed REALLY long to me. It wasn’t horrible. It’s just that there is only so much you can do with the Hulk as a character.
My son (the spoiler king) was very interested in this movie and managed to view (ahem) an early screening. I don’t think he got a third of the way thru.
It kinda sounded intriguing, but aside from The Sith Sense, MKS has been a dud for me. (I thought Lady sucked. sorry. lol. )
I don’t think I could be more unterested in Crystal Skull. One of those ‘there was no need to go there’ movies. Not up (down?) there with second StarWars trilogy, but not too far down the line.
Vanilla Sky, which I thought could have been a brilliant movie, or at least closer to 12 Monkeys or Fight Club, turned into one big WTF at the end for me.
>>the spoiler king
Jordan…it definitely does-wait for the video and go see Wanted twice instead
Jaye I don’t remember the end of Vanilla Sky but I know I saw it cuz I liked it………weird.
Yeah I’m not sure Crystal Skull was necessary but I did enjoy
Thanks for the warning, Amie. ‘ The Happening’ isn’t happening for me. I liked the new Indiana Jones movie, and I’m going to see ‘Wanted’ and ‘Hancock’ no matter what anyone says. :)
The Crystal Skull wrapped the series up nicely for me. I liked it. I also liked seeing the destiny of some artifacts from prior movies. I think George Lucas and Spielberg did the right thing by making him 19 years older. It would never had worked otherwise. Yeah, it could have been better, but it was better than I expected after all this time.
I can’t wait to see “Wanted”. I
also can’t wait to see the new “The Mummy.” Saw the trailer today and it looks to be interesting. I believe they have appropriately aged this series too. But, I don’t think Rachel Weiss is in it. That may be a distraction for me.
I wanna see the new Mummy movie too and and and X-FILES!!!!! OMG I saw the trailer on Saturday and I was *squee* and and and Babylon AD with Vin Diesel!
“I wanna see the new Mummy movie too and and and X-FILES!!!!! ”
Absolutely! (Although i suspect X-files, won’t be all that.) I’m really looking forward to The Dark Knight.
I actually liked The Village. The Sixth Sense is a category within itself, but the rest of his movies are scary in theory. Fear is based on what you THINK is around the corner. The director (since I’m not even going to try to spell his name) plays on that and then goes “see not so scary is it”. That pisses many, many people off.
Now Sex and The City movie was fan-tab. No it wasn’t like the show, but it stayed true to character. Truthfully many TV-Big Screens never stay true to character and I liked that.
And if I had the cash Wanted would be on my top priority to see.
Le sigh. I have to repeat that, LE SIGH. This movie was so incredibly stupid I laughed through the majority of it. I really thought his wife was developmentally challenged. She’d smile at the most odd times.
I’m still trying to get over the big bad scary were freaking plants.
I did go see The Hulk.
YES! YES! Ooooh yes! I have loved Edward Norton since American History X and he didn’t let me down with this movie.
As for a movie that totally let me down…Blood Rayne. Through most of it I was like
They actually had the nerve to make a sequel. Sure it went straight to video but still…
Blood Rayne was definitley one that never should have spawned children!
I love EN too–I should have gone with my gut. *sigh*
And on The Happening htey kept doing the WEIRDEST closeups on the wife’s eyes at the ODDEST times–and it was like her pupils were uber small (like she’d gone and gotten high right before filming)
