Why I Watch So Much TV
I figured it out while I was reading comments over at Watch With Kristin on Saturday after watching LOST–and if you’re NOT watching LOST you’re missing one of the best seasons yet!!!
Anyone someone over there made a comment about Sayid helping Ben (in post island flashforwards. How’s that for confusing???). And I commented back that Sayid isn’t the type of character to follow anyone blindly! If he’s helping Ben (who is NOTORIOUSLY Manipulative!!! And Locke is CRAZY for listening to him–though I think Locke is crazy as a hatter ANYWAY) he has his own reasons/agenda.
And the whole Jin/Sun thing this week? OMG I cried like a baby! Why? Because of the characterization! If you’ve watched the show over time and remember flashbacks from season one, then you know Jin is a changed man. Like REALLY changed. He’s a man who deeply loves his wife–and his backstory/reasons for doing what he did prior to coming to the island lend depth to his characterization.
Same goes for Penny and Desmond!!! Did anyone watch? MAN!!!! I CRIED!!!!!! That was classic romance in the truest sense of the word (or words as in “I’ll always find you”). Not that he actually may have said that but it was there. You FELT it. *sigh*
The whole tangled knot that is LOST is amazing to watch–from a writer’s perspective anyway.
So what are your favorite shows? Why? What do you think about the characterization? Who are your favorite characters….and why?

I love the brothers in Supernatural. I love the marriage in Medium. Love all the Law & Orders, not just for the plots/mysteries but the characterization/interactions of the regular cast members as well has the examination of human motivations, etc of the culprits/victims, etc.
Jaq I love the marriage in Medium too!!!! It’s so NORMAL but it works–who would have thought?!?
And Supernatural…again GREAT Characterization. One of my fave episodes is the one where they keep pulling pranks on each other because it’s SOOOOOOO brother-like. And while they’re dark and flawed and alone, they aren’t hateful or miserable and they just seem to take it all in stride.
BTW I LOVE the new guy on LAO this season. LOVE HIM. (the cop).
writing wise–I have to say Dexter is so…just mind boggling. The whole thing about taking a character who from the outset should be shunned and looked on as the bad guy and you root for him and like him and understand what he does and why–it makes you, the writer, look at things from another perspective!
Going off on a tangent here. I recently rented the the first season of Supernatural. Liked the brothers, liked the set-up, but, but…it’s horror!
(Yeah, I know. Should have realized that. But I thought it’d be more action-adventure paranormal.)
I don’t really like horror, so I’m bummed. I was looking forward to the show.
(As for LOST, we don’t have TV, so watch the dvds when they’re released. I’m REALLY looking forward to this season. It’s our favorite family show.)
OMG YES! I think Dexter is a FABULOUS example I love him in a way that’s just CREEPY
Jorrie this is BY FAR the best season of Lost. I’m so sorry ya’ll dont like Supernatural though! And see, i do consider it paranormal
TOtally an eye-of-the-beholder thing!
I’m a big Lost fan, too. The cemetery scene made me cry. I love Hurley. He’s just a big teddy bear. I was surprised that he was the only one who visited Sun. Did you see the preview? It said that someone was going to die in the next episode. Who could it be?
Jane i saved it on the DVR and I want to go back and watch it. I LURVE Hurley–i know some peeps don’t–but he’s just such a sweetie and has such a big heart. I just wish he’d shave more often
There’s some vids on “Kristen” for next week too…..I can’t WAIT!
Supernatural does it for me! I LURV that show. I also watch Smallville and American Idol on occasion. As for cable, I’m ashamed to say that yes, Cece, I’m addicted to Dexter! I can’t believe it, especially given my previous rants against the show. LOL
I’ve completely given up on Lost because frankly, I don’t think the writers know what the hell they’re doing. I just got so frustrated I stopped watching. None of it makes any sense to me. Polar bears in the tropics. Scary black smoke that stalks people. White horses and dead people walking around. I just couldn’t do it anymore…..
Tanay I almost gave up on Lost too but I love it like a fat kid loves cake
and WOOT on Dexter!!!! You know season one is on like CBS(?) on Sunday nights…..I DONT have Showtime or HBO so I have to wait for the last season to come out on DVD–same for the Wire so I’ve been avoiding spoilers. that’s another show i just LURVE and it’s the characterization that really makes it rock because it’s VERY VERY Gritty
I’m glad I’m not the only other one who was blubbering like a baby over Lost.
They do a lot to make you care about these people on an island that doesn’t exist. Good writers.
