S-T-R-E-T-C-H
So, there you are. Still digesting, huh? Gorged yourself on the Thanksgiving dinner? Worked too hard in the kitchen? Feel like all you want to do is sit and veg out? Maybe even feeling a little down with the prospect of the holidays looming over you?
Well, here’s the perfect solution.
S-T-R-E-T-C-H.
No, I’m not referring to working the abs and arse (although there is that too, lol).
I’m talking about stretching those writing muscles, considering flexing them in ways you haven’t been doing.
Writing in povs, genres, styles, or lengths you’d never considered before.
I’m currently in the middle of trying to finish two projects. I certainly didn’t need to deviate from that path—being a slow writer, I need to make use of every moment.
But last week I saw a contest that caught my eye. 250 words of short fiction, loosely based on a lovely photograph.
And durnit, I just had the urge to see if I could do it.
Wrote the story, then gritted my teeth to delete an extra scene, adjectives, adverbs, descriptive passages, etc., until it was nearly bare-boned 250 words. Like pulling out my own fingernails, let me tell ya. I loved some of those words.
But it was a challenge. I love a challenge. And it was worth it.
I think that stepping outside of our own self-made little boxes occasionally not only stirs the creative juices, but helps give us more confidence in our abilities.
How about you? Have you flexed your writing muscles lately? Hmmm??? ![]()

I haven’t flexed a damned thing.
This week totally blew my routine, and now I’ve got to fight to get it back before Christmas madness comes.
I can’t even get the stuff I’m supposed to write together, much less take on something new. Maybe in January…..
Yep.
Maybe in January…
Does dabbling in a futuristic count ? LOL Yeah I’ve stretched this year and with pleasantly surprising results!! Outisde of that, I haven’t had a lot of time to stretch lately :(
I’m on a roll right now so I’ve got three submissions. The first draft of my lastest is done. I’ve revised one story already. I’ve got nothing to do. This time I’m going to tackle 4 POVs. 2 couples. 4 character arcs. One story. Now when I’m rocking in a corner drooling out the side of my mouth try not to say “I told you so.”
250 words is only one page — that had to be a hand-wringer.
I finally tried something I’ve never done: writing a (very short) story in second person. It kept trying to shift into first and third, and then settled down and let me finish the entire draft. Now that I’ve done it once, I will happily go back to first and third.
The next thing I want to try is to write a story backward, from end to beginning, without stopping. That’s supposed to be another good test of your plotting/focus.
“Maybe in January…..”
(Making note to harass Tanya about stretching in January…)
“Yep.
Maybe in January…”
(Adding Bernita to said list…)
Yes, Ames, the futuristic definitely does count.
“…’Now when I’m rocking in a corner drooling out the side of my mouth try not to say “I told you so.’”
(Putting Mel on list for adult diapers and extra-large bibs…)
“I finally tried something I’ve never done: writing a (very short) story in second person.”
SECOND PERSON?!
“The next thing I want to try is to write a story backward, from end to beginning, without stopping.”
I’m w/Tanya . . . I haven’t really done a darn thing in a while. note to self: check who won the bet to take Ames out to lunch–draw Lynn?
mentally and physically I am exhausted. feeding 13 people is just daunting! (but house sparkled it was SO DAMN CLEAN!)
Hope you had a good day
I’ve been stretching. I try to go walking at least twice a week.

Seriously, though, I went to a conference, and pitched to an editor, and am working on finishing my WIP so I can submit it. So yeah. And once I finish this, I will dust off my finished manuscript and send it out again into the world.
“I’m w/Tanya . . . I haven’t really done a darn thing in a while.”
(Adding Dennie to list, checking it twice…)
Hope it was a great time, Dennie!
“I went to a conference, and pitched to an editor, and am working on finishing my WIP so I can submit it”
A pitch to an editor is a major stretch, Ann. Best of luck!
Denise - we have a draw.
I think I’ve atrophied ….
Oh, and congratulations for winning that contest!
“I think I’ve atrophied ….”
Then exercise is definitely called for, Bailey.
(Thank you).
