Bonus Materials
I’d heard of Joss Whedon before, but never knew very much about him. No, I never watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, etc. Yeah, I’m a heathen. Sue me.
But I did happen to see his film, Serenity, on cable this weekend. And it happened to be pretty good. So I blew my massive entertainment budget for the month and bought the DVD.
Bear with me…there really is a point to this, lol!
One of the special features of this disk (and many others) was “Bonus Materials”, including a voice-over commentary by the director, Mr. Joss Whedon.
I’d never bothered with this feature on any other disk. Frankly, it irritates me to have someone talking and distracting me when I’m deeply involved with a book or film.
But this was really fabulous—because I think I learned a few things, not just about filmmaking, but about WRITING.
The guy knows his stuff. He explains why a scene was put in a certain place, rather than earlier or later in the story. He shows the affinity between certain characters as expressed in settings, colors, and symbols. The use of flashbacks, humor, tragedy. Momentum. Archetypes. Heroism. And a great deal about cutting and trimming, sacrificing even your favorite parts if it adds to the integrity of the work.
I must admit I was surprised to find how similar filmmaking was to being an author…which was silly, I suppose, since it’s all storytelling. But it was interesting to hear—and SEE—the lessons from such a talented professional.
So, if you’ve got DVDs of films or directors you love lying around, and they happen to have the director’s voice-over option, give ‘em a listen-to one day.
You might be surprised at what you can learn. ![]()

Candy Havens wrote a biography on him . . .
the Joss Whedon book
but that is an interesting point–I have ALWYAS loved bonus stuff, it’s like being an insider without having to schmuck through the ranks of goffer to assitant PA to PA to whatever
(My kids have wathced one of their Pokemon movies with the voice over so many damn times, I could probably tell you it with out the director!)
oh and psst. . . I had never watched the Buffy shows either and when Candy was first talked about the book I thought she was talking about the guy who played Jimmy Olsen in Lois and Clark–DOH!
I COULD NOT figure out what was so interesting about him. . . DOH again!! but sssh don’t tell. . .
We must be on the same wavelength - I’m watching the series, FIREFLY, that movie was based on. It was only around one season but it’s REALLY good and I REALLY like Nathan Fillion (Mal). I blogged about that today over at my blog!
I have plans to watch the movie so I will definitely watch the bonus materials.
Oh and BTW, I never watched Buffy either.
I watched early Buffy but then Life Happened.
Keep your eye out for Firefly–sometimes you can find it on sale for 19.00 for the first season. It’s amazing–I wish I’d thought of it! I’ll have to watch the commentary sometime since I have Serenity on DVD at home.
The special extended version of the Lord of the Rings has several voice over tracks, one with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philipa Boyens (the writers) that is quite interesting (theres another track with the actors that is quite funny).
So I’m not the only Buffy non-viewer. Whew!
Dennie–Pokemon would drive me insane.
Great minds, Mik.
Cece, will keep an eye out for that sale. The series looks interesting…
Ann, I never thought about LOTR—and I’ve got ‘em all! Ack!! Thanks for the idea!
I haven’t watched the bonus stuff on the Serenity DVD, although I watched some of the series bonus segments.
Firefly is the only TV series I’ve ever purchased. I watched the movie without ever having seen Firefly and got so hooked that when the series came out, I squee’d. Right there in the middle of Target. Then I waited for it to go on sale.
I still watch the movie every chance I get. It’s such a fantastic story.
Isn’t it something, Sela?
Ok, now I just have to see the series, lol.
And it’s got me thinking of trying to write a bit of sci-fi…
I watched Buffy, Angel, Firefly and then Serenity. I have Firefly and Serenity. Now, if all of you people had just watched the series, maybe it wouldn’t have been canceled.
I haven’t watched with the commentary on Serenity, but I’ve listened to it on LOTR - great stuff.
I miss a lot of tv by working evenings, Bailey. Sux.

But I plan to make up for it!
Don’t blame me, Bailey! I was in the UK when it was on!
